Hata’s sacking shows Umno-BN’s media chokehold, says Kok

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 –Hata Wahari’s sacking from Utusan Malaysia today reveals both Umno’s and the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) government’s media chokehold, said DAP lawmaker Teresa Kok.
The opposition politician voiced her concern on the Umno-owned paper’s decision to fire the senior journalist, which is incidentally World Press Freedom Day.
Kok (picture) also called on all reporters, especially those in the mainstream media, to fight for the return of press freedom and continue to raise the bar in journalism.
“Hata Wahari’s sacking is not a small battle between one reporter and his employer. His termination from employment should be regarded seriously by all Malaysians because it shows how limited press freedom is in Malaysia, and the media monopoly by Umno and other BN component parties,” Kok said in a statement.
